Course Description

Varying terminology is used to describe the actions of parent/carers/adults who demonstrate health seeking behaviour which causes harm to a child. These terms include:Perplexing Presentation, Fabricated and Induced Illness (FII) and Munchhausen Syndrome by Proxy. etc.

The spectrum of behaviours demonstrated by parents/carers/adults can be varied and are often complex. They present the child as ill when they are healthy, deliberately induce symptoms of illness, falsely report symptoms or withhold nutrients or medication to produce symptoms.

This course is being delivered by a range of health, children social care and other professionals in response to a recent Manchester learning review and to raise awareness of this area to develop an understanding of what actions practitioners/professionals can take if there is suspicion a child is being harmed.

Revised guidance to professionals from the Government is currently being updated.

Aims

This half day course is aimed at multi agency professionals/practitioners who work with children and or their families in Manchester. This course will aim to assist practitioners in identifying the potential indicators of illness being fabricated or induced in a child. It will also highlight the risk of harm which individual abusers or potential abusers may pose to children in whom illness is being fabricated or induced.

The course will also introduce the Multi Agency and MASH pathways for referrals in Manchester where professionals are concerned or suspect that a child is being harmed though illness being fabricated or induced.

Complete a MSB Action Plan
